FIRE SUPPRESSION

We provide commercial, residential and wild land fire suppression services to the City of Terrace and out lying regions through a fire protection agreement with the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine.

FIRE PREVENTION

The Fire Prevention Program provides a regular inspection routine of commercial and public buildings in the City of Terrace. As local assistants to the Office of the Fire Commissioner we enforce the BC Fire Code, Fire Services Act and City of Terrace By-laws.

FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM

As part of a layered response with the BC Ambulance Service, the First Responder Program was created to to ensure that critical medical interventions such as early defibrillation, CPR, airway management, spinal stabilization, could still be delivered in the event Paramedics were delayed.

HIGHWAY RESCUE / AUTO EXTRICATION

Traffic along with quickly changing weather conditions make motor vehicle accidents a harsh reality in the north.

Auto Extrication has, over the past few decades, become a very spcialized field. With an increased use of light weight vehicle components, airbags, computer controled security and fuel systems, it has become even more important that fire fighters stay aware of changes in both vehicle designs and in extrication techniques.

Tools such as the "Jaws of Life" (often called "spreaders" or "jaws"), airbags for lifting, and other air and hydralic tools have greatly improved the fire fighter's ability to gain access to trapped victims quickly so as to save lives and reduce the impact of the injuries sustained.

TECHNICAL RESCUE

In an expanding role, firefighters provide a range of rescue services, Technical rescue includes: low and high angle rope, confined space, and trench rescue.

Rapid Intervention Team Firefighters are trained to provide on-scene rescue for firefighters who become lost or injured in a hazardous atmosphere.

HAZMAT

Terrace is the transportation hub of the northwest making hazardous materials a dangerous reality.  Terrace Firefighters are trained to an Operations Level meaning our primary goal is to respond in a defensive manner:

Identify the hazmat situation & Implement initial defensive actions to:

  • Protect people
  • Protect the Enviroment
  • Protect Property

EMERGENCY DISPATCH

We receive and dispatch emergency calls 24 hours a day. With 911 on the horizon, our dispatch is going to be contracted to a regional dispatch center in Prince George in late 2007.
